We Three Kegs

Today we are peering behind door number fifteen and we find…

Winter Beeracle, a 7.5% winter ale brewed with vanilla and citrus from Dead Frog Brewery.

Dead Frog Winter Beeracle

Winter Beeracle pours a deep mahogany colour with just a little cream coloured head. This ale has great clarity but the head retention is just so-so. There is lots of vanilla on the nose and a bit of caramel malt character. On first sip, I get malt up front, specifically a chocolate taste, vanilla again and the finish is bittered; not hoppy bitter but more like orange peel bitter. There is a nice strength to this ale; it is quite light bodied but at the same time there is a bit of a syrupy quality to it. As you drink I find the sweetness in this one a bit too overpowering for me and I quite like sweet beers. Vanilla extract  has this distinctive taste quite different from real vanilla bean and when you are used to using the real thing its hard to go back. For me, a great Christmas beer idea in theory (vanilla, chocolate malts and bitter orange) but perhaps not in execution.

I am giving Winter Beeracle six candy canes out of a possible ten.
