All I Want for Christmas is You, Beer

Door number five opens…

This time out we have Sleigh’r a dark double alt ale from Ninkasi Brewing Co. based in Eugene Oregon. Before I even begin to talk about the beer I have to give kudos for having one of the most creative beer names out there …rock on.

Sleigh’r pours a deep reddish brown with lots of cream coloured head and decent head retention. There is dark roasty malt on the nose as well as a fruity note that seems a little out of place. This one is medium bodied with a clean drinking quality that is deceptive for the beer’s robust tastes. Alt beer ferments with ale yeast at lager temperatures giving the ale a lager like character so perhaps this contributes to this unique mouthfeel. Flavour wise you get roasted malts and a bit of fruitiness again. There is a really strong bitterness to the finish that kind of sticks in your throat, I am guessing this is the result of Ninkasi ramping up the hops.

Conflicted by my love for a great beer name I have to say this one was just okay for me. As a Christmas beer I am giving Sleigh’r five candy canes out of a possible ten.
