Door number two opens…
Here we have what I can only assume is a Christmas beer called Polaris Julebryg from Nanoo Beer in Greenland – I say assume as I cannot actually read anything on the label but it sure looks Christmas-y to me.
What do you get if you cross mistletoe and a duck?
A Christmas Quacker.
Julebryg is a deep reddish chestnut coloured beer with a very small amount of head and a bit of cloudiness. The nose is sweet with some spice and an earthy element. Based on the nose and appearance this one could have just as easily fit into my pumpkin beer series. Julebryg has a very tepid mouthfeel and it is pretty light bodied. Flavour wise you get sweet malt and a bit of a nutty element but overall it is a pretty subtle beer. The finish is hard to pinpoint, maybe a lingering spiciness but not much.
Julebryg does not scream Christmas beer to me, this is most likely due to its similarity to the pumpkin beers I just reviewed and also the fact that what makes a great ‘Christmas’ beer is almost entirely subjective.
I am giving this one five candy canes out of a possible ten.
